Civil society monitoring

Civil society organisations have been criticising the official assessment and review of the SDGs by the German Sustainable Development Strategy for years. Numerous indicators remain weak, irrelevant or are simply not achieved in the Sustainable Development Strategy. In important areas, indicators are lacking. Measure after measure is listed without any indication of the extent to which they are achieved or what real impact they have on sustainability. It is often not clear who is supposed to implement them or who bears responsibility for non-implementation. Entire policy fields that are outlined in the SDGs are omitted. Overcoming unsustainable policies remains secondary in the presentation of government actions, which makes the Sustainable Development Strategy look like a summary of the ministries' current areas of action, rather than a strategy.

To complement the official German SDG monitoring, we have developed a civil society SDG monitoring, which compares the data of the official SDG monitoring by the German Sustainability Strategy to a monitoring supplemented with civil society indicators.
