Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

SDG 6 includes access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as further sub-targets on the protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems (including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers and lakes). Water quality is to be improved and pollution of water by hazardous chemicals reduced. Transboundary cooperation is to be promoted for integrated management of water resources at all levels. Depending on which indicators are used to measure progress, the achievement of the goal of a more sustainable Germany by 2030 is assessed differently. The progress calculation of the official German Sustainable Development Strategy includes three indicators, the indicator list extended by the model project includes the three official indicators plus two additional indicators.

Where does Germany stand in the implementation of SDG 6?

Percentage of SDG implementation:

Progress is calculated using the mean values of the indicators. For the model project, progress cannot be calculated due to lack of data.

Official monitoring

The official monitoring comprises three indicators and measures water pollution and the promotion of access to drinking water and sanitation in emerging and developing countries. On this basis, progress on SDG 6 is calculated at 78 percent.

Civil society monitoring

For civil society monitoring, we propose an extended list of indicators. The extended indicator list includes the three official indicators and two supplementary indicators to indicate the ecological status of lakes and rivers in Germany. The data for these supplementary indicators has not been updated since 2015, which is why progress for SDG 6 cannot be calculated with the indicators of the model project.
