Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

SDG 12 calls for a shift to sustainable consumption and production and includes targets on more efficient use of natural resources, the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all waste and the reduction of waste and food waste. It also requires companies to report sustainability information and calls for the promotion of sustainable development awareness and sustainability criteria in public procurement, as well as the reduction of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies. Depending on which indicators are used to measure progress, the achievement of the goal of a more sustainable Germany by 2030 is assessed differently. The progress calculation of the official German Sustainable Development Strategy includes seven indicators. 2030Watch adds three indicators to these.

Where does Germany stand in the implementation of SDG 12?

Percentage of SDG implementation:

Progress is calculated using the mean values of the indicators.

Official SDG monitoring

The German Sustainable Development Strategy comprises seven indicators and measures above all market-related aspects, such as the number of eco-friendly products, company registrations and energy consumption in relation to consumption. On this basis, a progress of 10.7 percent has been calculated.

2030Watch proposes an extended list of indicators. The extended indicator list includes the official indicators and three supplementary indicators, aiming in particular to point out superfluous consumption and production patterns and to highlight that Germany, as an industrialized country, has a disproportionately large ecological footprint with regard to global ecosystems. This results in a calculated progress of 13.3 percent.
