Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

SDG 5 includes sub-targets on discrimination, violence, participation, unpaid care burden, access to healthcare and equal opportunities in political, economic and public life. Depending on which indicators are used to measure progress, the achievement of the goals of a more sustainable Germany by 2030 is assessed differently. The progress calculation of the official German Sustainable Development Strategy includes five indicators. 2030Watch extends these by four new indicators and one modified indicator.

Where does Germany stand in the implementation of SDG 5?

Percentage of SDG implementation:

Progress is calculated using the mean values of the indicators.

Official SDG monitoring

The German Sustainable Development Strategy comprises five indicators and measures above all - but not only - the economic component via the earnings gap between women and men and the number of women in leadership positions in business and the public sector. On this basis, progress on SDG 5 is 136.7 percent.

Civil society SDG monitoring

2030Watch expanded indicator list includes an additional five indicators, with a modified target value for one official indicator and four new indicators to better reflect the range of gender equity with indicators on household work, violence, and participation in political life. From this complementary set of indicators, a target achievement of 90.2 percent is calculated.
