End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

SDG 2 includes as sub-targets to combat hunger, malnutrition and undernutrition worldwide. In addition, SDG 2 calls for more smallholder and sustainable agriculture as well as genetic diversity and better regulation of international markets with regard to food. Depending on which indicators are used to measure progress and which target values are set, the implementation status of the SDGs in Germany is assessed differently. The progress calculation of the official German Sustainable Development Strategy includes two indicators for SDG 2, 2030Watch supplements this with three new indicators and one modified indicator.

Where does Germany stand in the implementation of SDG 2?

Percentage of SDG implementation:

Progress is calculated using the mean values of the indicators.

Official monitoring

The official monitoring includes two indicators related to the environmental impact of domestic agriculture. On this basis, the calculated progress is 48.5 percent.

Civil society monitoring

In civil society monitoring, we propose an expanded indicator list with a higher target value for the official indicator "nitrogen surplus" as well as three additional indicators on pesticide use, antibiotic use and meat consumption to also take into account the influence of agricultural policies abroad. This supplementary set of indicators results in a calculated progress of 52.4 percent on SDG 2.
