Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

SDG 7 includes targets on affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy. Since sustainable development requires climate-friendly economic development, the share of renewable energies in the global energy mix is to be significantly increased and the global rate of increase in energy efficiency is to be doubled. Research into renewable energy and energy efficiency is to be promoted, as are investments in energy infrastructure and clean energy technologies. Depending on which indicators are used to measure progress, the achievement of the goal of a more sustainable Germany by 2030 is assessed differently. The progress calculation of the official German Sustainable Development Strategy includes four indicators and 2030Watch adds three indicators to this list.

Where does Germany stand in the implementation of SDG 7?

Percentage of SDG implementation:

Progress is calculated using the mean values of the indicators.

Official SDG monitoring

The German Sustainable Development Strategy comprises four indicators and measures final energy productivity, primary energy consumption, the share of renewable energies and the share of electricity from renewable energy sources. On this basis, progress of 51.3 percent is calculated.

Civil society SDG monitoring

2030Watch proposes an extended list of indicators. The expanded indicator list includes four official indicators and three supplementary indicators to highlight in particular the problematic issue of fossil fuels and "dirty energy". Based on this complementary set of indicators, progress is calculated at 55 percent.
