Change happens in small ways
The newly published report "Local Leadership Driving Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals" summarises the experiences of the SDG Leadership Cities Network. The network is coordinated by the Brookings Center for Sustainable Development and is tasked with examining the role of cities and local governments in achieving the SDGs. The researchers found that cities are no longer just reporting on progress pro forma, but are proactively engaging in SDG partnerships with relevant stakeholders from city government, community representatives and the region, as well as with other cities, to work together towards the development goals. According to the report, cities are experiencing the "SDG effect", i.e. they are not only discovering ways to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda, but also realising how they themselves benefit from the SDGs.
