"BeyondSDG"- New Research Project at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
For his grant proposal"Transformation towards long-term sustainability beyond Sustainable Development Goals", Prajal Pradhan, senior scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), receives the prestigious HORIZON Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) in the amount of 1.5 million euros.
" Failure to achieve the SDGs will negatively impact billions of peopleand exacerbate environmental conditions and socioeconomic problems[...]," says Prajahl Pradhan.
The project, now funded by the ERC grant, will identify critical targets for prioritizing the SDGs, examine the implications of (not) achieving the SDGs for long-term sustainability beyond 2030, and identify sustainability targets for the post-2030 development agenda. To this end, BeyondSDG will apply a three-pronged scientific approach combining statistical analysis of empirical and modeled data, qualitative analysis of literature, and co-creation of knowledge with stakeholders, including practitioners and policy makers, based on systems thinking.
"This combination of three approaches is complementary and essential to address the complex issue of long-term sustainability," says Johan Rockström, director of PIK."BeyondSDG is expected to lead to a breakthrough in interdisciplinary research by combining approaches from sustainability science, Earth system modeling, and environmental and resource management."
