Kick-off of the update process of the German Sustainability Strategy (DNS)

The German Sustainability Strategy (DNS) is updated every four years. In the process, the German government first discusses the further development of the strategy directly with citizens. Subsequent online consultations will provide further opportunities for exchange before all ministries and the Federal Chancellery begin drafting a new strategy. The basis for this process is the DNS as amended in March 2021. Around 1,500 citizens were involved in the further development in the associated process in 2019/2020.

On October 19, 2023, the kick-off event of the renewal process took place on the EUREF campus in Berlin. Almost 150 representatives from science, business and civil society met here to give the starting signal for an urgently needed renewal process. At the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda, which was adopted by the United Nations in 2015 and on which the DNS is based, it is clear that all states must significantly step up their efforts to achieve the SDGs. Two panels and workshops on the six transformation areas were intended to provide initial impetus for the reform process.

Public participation in the DNS update is scheduled to end in the fall of 2024 with consultation of associations. The updated strategy is then to be published in winter 2024 following a decision by the German cabinet. More information on the DNS and its further development can be found here.
