Launch of the Berlin-Brandenburg cell phone campaign: film evening "The Illusion of Abundance"

Three women, three countries, three struggles: this documentary tells the stories of Bertha, Carolina and Máxima, who are fighting global environmental destruction in Honduras, Brazil and Peru. They relentlessly raise their voices when transnational corporations accept the loss of the environment and human lives in the name of profit. Máxima is an indigenous farmer from Peru. She is fighting against the expansion of gold mining and for the preservation of her livelihood. Carolina lives in Brazil and is campaigning for education and justice in the case of the dam collapse in Brumadinho. Berta Cáceres was killed in 2015 because of her fight against the construction of a hydropower plant. Her daughter Bertha has been working to solve the murder ever since.

How do you fight against companies as an individual? And how, when your own life is in danger? This is a movie about courage, resistance and the will to stand up to abusive corporations. The trailer can be seen here.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Paola Reyes (filmmaker and activist from Honduras) and Julius Neu (INKOTA's expert on raw materials policy, business and human rights). With the Berlin-Brandenburg cell phone campaign, the INKOTA network is committed to the sustainable use of raw materials. We collect disused cell phones in order to use valuable metals for longer or to recycle them. In this way, we protect human rights and the environment. More at: www.handyaktion-berlin.de.
