How has the share of renewable energies in gross final energy consumption developed?

Further information on this indicator

  • For the progress assessment of the expansion of renewable energy sources in Germany, this indicator shows the relation between the generation volume from renewable energy sources and the gross final energy consumption in Germany. The use and further expansion of renewable energy sources is relevant for the reduction of climate damage caused by the use of fossil energy sources. This indicator measures the energy generated from various sources such as hydro, solar, wind, solar, geothermal and energy derived from biomass. It assumes 100% domestic consumption of the renewable-generated energy used here, without considering exports at peak generation times. Accordingly, the share of renewable energy generation in gross electricity may be overestimated.

  • The share of renewable energy generation in relation to gross final energy consumption is expected to have increased to 30% by 2030 and 60% by 2050.

  • Destatis gives 2% as the baseline for the year 1990.

  • This is an official indicator of the German Sustainability Strategy.
