Cities as global sustainability actors: New GPF Briefing

A newly published briefing by the Global Policy Forum provides information on the role of cities and regions in achieving the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More and more cities are not only active in SDG implementation at local level, but are also reporting on this at global level. This takes the form of so-called Voluntary Local Reviews. There are now over 200 of them worldwide, including around a dozen from Germany. Following the example of the Voluntary National Reviews on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, they are to be presented at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).
In the spirit of inclusive multi-level multilateralism, cities and their global alliances are also playing a growing role in other areas of global politics. To take this into account, the UN Secretary-General set up an Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments in October 2023, which is to submit proposals for the increased institutional involvement of cities and regions in the United Nations by the UN Future Summit in September 2024.
