A climate for tax justice

We are now at a crucial point in understanding and mobilizing the role of taxation for climate justice. While the Paris Agreement set emissions targets without mentioning the role of tax policy, there is now a growing consensus that part of the missing climate finance gap should be raised through targeted tax measures. The role of taxes in closing part of the climate finance gap is finally being recognized.

Beyond the targeted taxes that can lead to higher revenues, tax justice offers a holistic, systemic vision of how parts of the global financial system can be reshaped to achieve critical climate justice outcomes. For example, eliminating financial secrecy and creating a favorable regulatory environment will enable positive climate outcomes. If we cannot tax the largest economic actors because we do not know where their activities take place, we cannot effectively tackle the negative externalities of their activities.

At this event, we will discuss the power of tax policy for climate justice from different angles. It will bring together experts and activists from the fields of inequality, climate and human rights to share their expertise and insights on why a progressive tax system is a necessary building block for a just transition and how to reduce inequality and protect vulnerable communities in the process.
