2023 - What's next for the global sustainability agenda?
The year 2023 marks the halfway point in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In view of intensified geopolitical conflicts and unresolved crises, governments, civil society organizations and scientists will take stock. What has been achieved so far in the realization of the SDGs, where have there been setbacks, what political relevance does the 2030 Agenda still have at all in times of the "turning point"? The United Nations will address such questions at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July and an SDG Summit in September 2023. In preparation, the preliminary version of the next Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) will be released in spring 2023. In parallel, following his report "Our Common Agenda," the UN Secretary-General has initiated various discussion and negotiation processes to support multilateral problem-solving. These deal with issues such as a new agenda for peace, the rights of future generations and reforms to the international financial architecture. The highlight is to be a "Future Summit" of the United Nations in 2024.
At an expert discussion, the Global Policy Forum and Forum Environment and Development want to look ahead to 2023 and explore what can be expected politically from the events at the UN level. What are the plans for the mid-term of the 2030 Agenda in the German government, what are the expectations of civil society organizations? Can the activities spark a new dynamic in global efforts to achieve a socio-ecological transformation?
