EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs underlines the importance of SDG monitoring
In his speech to the European Parliament's Environment and Development Committees on May 11, EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Gentiloni, who is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the SDGs at the EU level, outlined the European Union's current status on Agenda 2030 and cautioned that the implementation of the SDGs must be driven forward more strongly, also and especially in the face of the multiple current crises. While the EU has made progress overall, both economically and in reducing greenhouse gases, despite the Corona pandemic, much more needs to be done, particularly with regard to SDG 13, he said. Against this backdrop, Gentiloni stressed the importance of reliable data and monitoring processes. He announced that SDG country reports would be published in the 2022 European Semester at the same time as proposals for country-specific recommendations. There would also be a shared willingness in the Commission, Council and Parliament to conduct an "EU Voluntary Review" in the run-up to the 2023 HLPF, summarizing and discussing with stakeholders all EU commitments, targets and initiatives related to the SDGs.
